Paul Robb

Paul Robb is a synthesizer player, producer, songwriter and one of the founding members of the synthpop band Information Society.

Robb was in the band from their inception in the early 1980s until 1992 (after its third release Peace & Love Inc.).

When Information Society's contract with Tommy Boy/Reprise/Warner Bros. Records ended, Paul (who at the time had a new infant) chose to work in films and commercials, winning two Clio Awards for BMW ads in the process. In 1996, he started a record company called Hakatak International. Hakatak featured his one-man industrial-tinged band Think Tank, as well as a trip-hop- and world music-flavored collaboration with Minneapolis folk singer Barbara Cohen named Brother Sun Sister Moon.

When trip-hop briefly gained mainstream popularity following the release of Portishead's Dummy, Brother Sun Sister Moon recorded for Virgin Records, causing the temporary dissolution of Hakatak in June 1997. No album ever resulted from that deal, however, and to this day neither Robb nor Virgin will say what happened.

Robb continued to do TV, film, and commercial work but had no further commercially recorded output until January 2002, when he reappeared with a new record company named Bleep! Records and an album under the name of Luminous, which turned out to be a renamed Brother Sun Sister Moon. The Bleep! Web site promised a new Robb solo album under the name Bitcrusher, but that album was not released before Robb's investors pulled the plug and killed Bleep! in late 2002.

Robb owns a recording studio in Los Angeles called Digitalis (a pun on the heart drug) and continues to produce music for advertisements and television shows. His credits include MTV's Real World and Road Rules and the score for Trey Parker and Matt Stone's first movie Orgazmo. He later remixed the theme for Parker and Stone's long-running South Park series and was involved in the Chef Aid album as well.

It was announced in 2006 that Robb and James Cassidy would reform Information Society with a new vocalist, Chris Anton. Original vocalist Kurt Harland opted out, citing work and family obligations (but occasionally performs with Information Society in concerts when Anton is not available). In 2007, the band released an EP, Oscillator, and a new album, Synthesizer, under the resurrected Hakatak label.

Taunton flower show

Taunton Flower Show is an annual flower show held in Taunton, Somerset, England. It was first held on August 16, 1866 in the grounds of a Mr Kinglake of Taunton and led, in the course of time, to the establishment of Vivary Park at top of the town’s High Street. The fist show featured competitive classes for professional gardeners, cottagers and ladies' flower classes.

The show has weathered two world wars and even a flash flood in 1997 when the park appeared to revert to its historic role as the fishponds of the Bishop of Winchester (Vivary being derived from Vivarium - Latin for ‘fishpond’). Exhibitors had worked up to midnight to set up their displays the evening before the show. Torrential rain overnight meant the site was two feet deep in water as day dawned. The public were barred entry on the grounds of concern for their safety and judges donned waders to examine the entries before making way for the sad sight of workmen dismantling what they could as the waters subsided.

The show is sometimes subject to the vagaries of the weather. In 2001 one weather report on the first morning forecast a heatwave, unhelpfully stated that anyone attending the show would be fried alive. It took considerable effort to get the message to other media commentators that the tents were actually the coolest place to evade the excessive heat but attendances were demonstrably down that year. 2007 was a very wet summer but the weather cleared just in time and the show went ahead as planned.

The public will always determine the fate of each year’s event. It relies on amateurs and professional horticulturalists and floriculturalists to provide exhibits and trade displays of a high standard. Garden Clubs are especially welcomed and many of their members volunteer to take their turn in stewarding for a few hours during the two days. As a registered charity, Taunton Flower Show relies entirely on the voluntary effort of many gifted and dedicated people to ensure the horticultural heritage will be handed on to successive generations.

[edit] Events

The show has moved on from that initial show in 1866 and now features a wonderful floral marquee, marching bands, arena events, garden traders. The recent introduction of New Orleans-style Jazz has provided a lighter accompaniment to the tasteful dining experience on offer adjacent to the fountain. Thrills if not spills are guaranteed by top class entertainment in the arena with thought-provoking opportunities for dedicated gardeners in a Garden Doctor Forum and Lecture programme located in the ‘Seeds of Knowledge’ Tent.

141 years on it seems that Taunton Flower Show is still prospering. Indeed Mr H Fox, who won a prize in 1866 for Achimenes is the great uncle of Richard Fox, one of the present show committee members and who has worked tirelessly for the Taunton Flower Show for 36 years.

Mission Puerto de Purísima Concepción was founded in October, 1780 by Father Francisco Garcés. The settlement was not part of the California mission chain, but was administered as a part of the Arizona missions. The Mission site and nearby pueblo was inadequately supported, and Spanish colonists seized the best lands, destroyed the Indians' crops, and generally igonored the rights of the local natives. In retaliation the Quechan (Yuma) Indians and their allies attacked and destroyed the installation and the neighboring Mission San Pedro y San Pablo de Bicuñer over a three-day period, from July 1719, 1781.

Today, only a historical marker identifies the site. The marker is located on Picacho Road in Fort Yuma, 1 mi S of Winterhaven Road.
